1992-1993
“To connect to the Filipinos on campus, we made invitations and delivered them to the dorm mailboxes for events. We also had a simple newsletter, posters and word of mouth to communicate info. This was before social media. It was also promoted at the [Michiana] Fil-AM church - they engaged us to do church services and weekend events. After a few Friday evening vespers, more international students joined too. We did services at Hinsdale and in Toronto too.”
Although records indicate that “andrews Filipino Association” existed in the Cardinal yearbook, it is thought that the club had not yet officially been organized. This group set the foundation for one of the longest-running clubs on campus. With the support of the Local filipino-American church, surrounding community, and a few close friends, the andrews filipino association (AFA) was officially founded at the beginning of the 1992-1993 school year. Ron-jo Ombao was inaugurated as the first president of AFA and led his team with Judy Cardona as Public Relations Director and Milbert Mariano as Faculty sponsor.
