Pilipino Culture Night

PCN 2011 was held April 3 at 6 p.m. at Andrews Academy. Tickets were $8, and proceeds totaling $830 benefited Adventist World Aviation. The event's main feature was a play entitled The Culture Within, written and produced by Gervea Ornopia. The play showcased a young woman's debut and also covered the story of Jose Rizal. The event was covered in the Lake Union Herald: AFIA sponsors aviation ministry in the Philippines

Some area business helped sponsor the program: Baguette de France, Vineland Center, and Mabuhay Oriental Store.

Youtube Artist Benefits Concert

On November 12, AFIA presented a benefit concert featuring YouTube artists Manny Garcia Band and Melissa Polinar. The concert was at 7pm at the Box Factory. Tickets were $10 for AFIA members and $15 for non-members; proceeds benefited Adventist World Aviation.

Pilipino Culture Night

The 2012 Pilipino Culture Night was held on Sunday, April 8 at PMC. There was dinner and a play titled Noong Unang Panahon (translated: Once Upon a Time). It was written and directed by Richmond Pajela. Dinner was served in the Commons at 5pm; AFIA members were charged $3 and non-members were charged $5. No fee was charged for the play, which was held in the PMC Youth Chapel. Co-curricular credit was available to students for attendance. The event was supported by four area businesses who advertised in the playbill: Baguette de France, United Sports Apparel, the University Barber Shop, and Vineland Center.

The 2013 Pilipino Culture Night was held April 7 at 3:00 pm in Burman Hall. The main feature, entitled Moving Forward, Looking Back, was a variety show consisting of several comedy sketches and cultural dances. It was written by James Magbanua and Earl Quiba. The event was supported by four business sponsors: Mabuhay, Vineland Center, Baguette de France, and United Sports Apparel.

The 2013–2014 academic year was AFIA's 22nd year, and saw significant charitable fundraising following Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The officers for the year were elected April 25, 2013. There were 249 members.

Alumni Reunion and 20th Anniversary Celebration

On September 27 and 28, AFIA participated in the 2013 Andrews University alumni weekend, celebrating the club's twenty-year legacy. Pastor Roy Castelbuono spoke for Friday night's vespers at 7:00 pm in Newbold Auditorium. Guest speaker Sebastien Braxton spoke at the Sabbath Service at Michiana Fil-Am SDA Church and again later that evening at a sundown devotional and social titled "Halo-Halo Mixer". The mixer was held at 7:30 pm in the Andrews Discipleship Center.

Many Hands, One Hope Campaign

Following the devastating Typhoon Haiyan in early November 2013, AFIA began efforts to raise money for relief efforts in the Philippines. ADRA was selected as the charity target and thousands of dollars were raised during the school year.

During the week of November 11-15, AFIA sold club sweatshirts and beanies at the Campus Center, raising over $1000 towards ADRA's Philippines relief efforts. See the Andrews Agenda for November 19, 2013. The efforts were also covered by local newspaper The Herald Palladium: Filipino Community Rallies and Prays. James Magbanua, AFIA president, was also interviewed by ABC 57: Andrews Agenda for November 12, 2013.

AFIA again sold apparel at the Symphony Orchestra Fall Concert on November 23, 2013, donating 100% of the proceeds to ADRA, according to an Andrews University press release. By December 16, efforts had raised $8,800.

 

Benefit Dinner

AFIA hosted a benefit dinner aiding ADRA's relief efforts in the Philippines. The dinner was held at Vineland Center on February 9 at 5pm. It was emceed by GT Weithers and featured a silent auction with items from local businesses. Entertainment was provided by AFIA members and a performance by Equilibrium, the winners of AU's Got Talent.[2] Tickets were $30 for students, $40 for faculty & staff, and $50 for community members. It was advertised in the Andrews Agenda and received mention in the Lake Union event news. The menu was Polynesian chicken with fried rice, tortellini Alfredo Florentine, California blend veggies, egg rolls & sauce, salad, and rolls. Kapamilya Vespers

AFIA held a vespers titled Kapamilya on Friday, November 8 at 7pm in the Lamson Chapel. Jon Remitera spoke.

Friday Night Elements Vespers

AFIA hosted a vespers Friday night, March 7, at 9pm, following University Vespers. It was titled Friday Night Elements and dealt with discipleship on campus, within AFIA, and individually. The vespers was held in the PMC Early Teen Loft.

Pilipino Culture Night

PCN was held April 6 at 2pm in Newbold Auditorium. The play, directed by Gervea Ornopia, was titled Si Romeo At Si Juliet.

The 2014–2015 academic year was AFIA's 23rd year of existence and featured more vespers than previous years and several new events, including the 5K Rice Run. This year's PCN saw the largest number of event sponsors of any year. The administration, led by Jon Remitera, was elected April 23, 2014.

Ice Cream Social

he Andrews University Ice Cream Social was held Wednesday, September 17, 2014. AFIA set up the Food Fair booth, which was manned by officers.

Welcome Back Bash

The first event of the year was the Welcome Back Bash, held at 7:17 pm on September 20 at Fil-Am Church. Co-curricular credit was offered, and food was served.

The 2014 Rice Run was a 5k race organized by AFIA to promote MRSA awareness and benefit the MRSA Survivors Network. Money raised from the run was used to finance a $500 donation to the Network. The run was held at 8 a.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2014 along the Lake Michigan shoreline in St. Joseph, Michigan. There were 69 participants. Registration fees were $20 for students and $25 for others.

The 2015–2016 academic year marked the 24th year of AFIA's existence. The club continue with its two major annual events, including the 5k Rice Run and Pilipino Culture Night, as well some smaller events for the first time, such as Club Night. The Executive Committee consisted of eleven officers led by Ryan Jarvis as President. Most of the officers were elected April 21, 2015,[1] and the three Representatives were appointed later in early September. This school year also saw the addition of Ellie Chuah as co-sponsor following Arlene Saliba's retirement from AFIA the previous year.

 
The year began with a leadership retreat at Crystal Springs United Methodist Camp. The officers stayed at the camp overnight, September 5–6, 2015. The officers discussed ideas and plans for the upcoming year.

Vespers

The first vespers of the year was held in conjunction with the Welcome Back Party on October 23, 2015, at 5:30 in Michiana Fil-Am Church. The year's theme of "Kapuso", or "Same Heart", was introduced. Food was served, including 375 lumpia that the officers rolled. Co-curricular credit was available to attendees.

Club Night

Saturday, November 14 was designated by the Andrews University Office of Student Activities & Involvement to be "Club Night", an opportunity for campus clubs to host events without conflicting with any AUSA or Student Activities event. AFIA hosted an egg roll-making event titled "Roll With Us!" in the Buller Hall Student Lounge.

 

International Night

International Student Services organized an International Night for November 7, 2015. At the event, AFIA members performed the tinikling.

The 2016–2017 academic year was AFIA's 25th year as a student organization. The theme for the year was Bukas Ngayon ("tomorrow starts now"). This year saw one of the largest number of events and an increase in cooperative events with other clubs.

The executive committee consists of 12 officers led by Emma Magbanua, President. Voting for the officers was held online and closed April 15, 2016. Election results were announced April 18.

Afterglow

The first vespers of the year was titled AFIA Afterglow, and was held in the PMC Early Teen Loft on Friday, September 16, 2016 following University Vespers. The event featured blacklights and light refreshments were served.

A second AFIA Afterglow was held in the same location on Friday, January 27, 2017 following University Vespers.

 

Welcome Back Bash

The Welcome Back Bash was held at 6:04pm on Friday, September 23, 2016 at Michiana Fil-Am Church. Games and food were held in the Andrews Discipleship Center and vespers followed in the church sanctuary. Hannah Baquiran spoke.

The 2017–2018 academic year was AFIA's 26th year as a student organization. The theme for that year was Kabilang ka ("you are counted for").

The executive committee was led by Michelle Rae Sabangan as President.

Pilipino Culture Night

The 2018 Pilipino Culture Night was held April 1 at 3:02 pm in Andrews Academy. The main performance was an original musical entitled Nandito Ako. The script was written by Bernadette Flores and the music was written by Jeremy Ahn. Bernadette, Jeremy, and Carlyle Tagalog directed. The tinikling and sakuting dances were also performed. Admission was $5 for AFIA members and $8 for others. Children 10 and under were free.

Night Market

AUSA organized a night market in Chan Shun Hall on November 12, 2017, from 5:30-7:30 pm, where clubs were able to sell food and other wares. There was also live music and a photo booth. AFIA operated a booth, selling pancit, lumpia, beanies, and shirts.

AFIA Auntie Potlucks

AFIA enlisted the help of several members of the community to host potlucks for small groups of AFIA members. Community members committed to serve meat or vegetarian dishes for a certain number of students, and then AFIA members signed up to attend potlucks at the houses of their choosing. The first AFIA Aunties potlucks were held in the Fall Semester on November 18, 2017, and hosts included Arnie Baker, Vicki Wiley, Shylene Toscano, Annie Lopez, Ernst Jacques, Loida Medina, and Elliscent Chuah. A second round of potlucks during Spring Semester were held February 3, 2018, and hosts included Annie Lopez, Fares Magesa, Shylene Toscano, Ernst Jacques, Roy Castelbuono, Kristen Jones, and Lynette Quinones.

With the inauguration of Joshua knowlton as president, afia entered its 27th year as a student organization. Bayanihan was chosen as the theme for the year. This year saw more collaborative events with other campus clubs. The pCN for this year paid homage to the Early versions of PCN, focusing on filipino dances and songs.

AFIA x KASA x ASIS Banquet

On November 17, 2018, AFIA hosted a Crazy Rich Asians-themed banquet in collaboration with the Korean American Student Association (KASA) and the Andrews Society of Indonesian Students (ASIS). The banquet was held at The Inn at Harbor Shores and featured a program consisting of musical acts, cultural dances, and traditional Korean games. The program was emceed by two AFIA officers: Delroy Brockett and Hannah Sabangan.

Pilipino Culture Night

Instead of doing a play production, AFIA chose to go back to its pcn roots by putting together a program focused on cultural dances and songs. The PCN was held in Buller hall on April 21, 2019. The dances Sayaw sa bangko, Pandanggo sa ilaw, maglalatik, Sakuting, and tinikling were performed, and the songs Sa Iyong manga yapak and rosas pandan were sung by a choir. Afterwards, food booths set up in the style of a street market served traditional foods, such as pancit, lumpia, kwek-kwek, kanin, turon, and siopao. Juice and sodas were also served in plastic bags, akin to drinks served in the Philippines.
